Machu Picchu – Peru

I had always dreamed of visiting Machu Picchu! It looked so promising, an Incan Citadel high up in the Andes Mountains. We planned our trip only a few weeks ahead but it was amazing. During my stay in Chile it was easy to travel to the surrounding countries and I took this opportunity to discover Peru with my boyfriend. I was so excited to visit this amazing UNESCO World Heritage sights, and I must stay that my expectations were exceeded by the stunning landscapes and extraordinarily beautiful setting.

To visit Machu Picchu we booked a tour with loki travel called “Inka Jungle Trek 4 Days” and it was amazing! You also have the option to do the trek in 3 days which we did. If you don’t want to spend to much money but at the same time are looking for an adventurous and unique experience this is definitely worth looking into.

TIP: pack light, bring a small back pack with the essentials for 3 days: sleeping bag, insect repeller, mosquito net, hiking shoes, sunblock and a waterproof jacket (essential during raining season). You can leave the rest of your stuff at the Loki hostel in Cusco.

Day 1: Cusco to Santa Theresa

The tour begins at 6h30 with pickup at the Loki reception in Cusco. Cusco is set at an altitude of 3400. I recommend you to stay in Cusco for 2 days to acclimate before starting your trek. The Loki Hostel in Cusco is very enjoyable and a perfect place to stay before your trip to Machu Picchu starts. After the pickup we  drove to an altitude of 4200 meters were started our mountain bike tour.  You will downhil with an amazing view over the valley, passing waterfalls and mountain villages.

TIP: If you have problems to acclimate, drink some cocoa tea

Our adventurous day ended with a visit to the relaxing Santa Theresa hot springs, which ended up to be a perfect evening.

TIP don’t forget your insect repeller, there are a lot of mosquitos. I would also recommend you to bring your mosquito net.

Day 2: Santa Theresa to Aguas Calientes

Day 2 we flew through the air above the Peruvian Jungle. A zip line took us over rivers through the forrest. This was really fun to do.

After our adventurous morning we continued our trek hiking for 3 hours to Aguas Calientes. It was a beautiful hike through the forrest with an amazing lunch in a cottage in the middle of the jungle.

Today is the day we finally went to Machu Picchu. The best time to go up is early in the morning. Machu Picchu opens at 6 am. If you book a hostel the night before, you can wake up early and take a bus at 5:3O am or hike up from Aguas Clients. This will ensure that you arrive before the mass crowd and have a first quiet and sincere look over Machu Picchu.

TIP: The best season to visit Machu Picchu is from May through September, cause it is dry season.

If you want to hike up to Wayna Picchu like we did make sure you buy your tickets of few weeks in front of your trip. You can book the ticket to Wayna Picchu additional to your ticket for Machu Picchu. If you are arranging your trip with Loki Travel you can ask them to arrange your ticket to Wayna Picchu. Otherwise you can book them on the website of Machu Picchu: http://ticketmachupicchu.com

The view is definitely worth the climb.
